Cerebral Palsy and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Eileen Fowler, PhD, PT is the Director of Research and Education for the Center for Cerebral Palsy at UCLA/Orthopaedic Institute for Children, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. She holds the Peter William Shapiro Chair for the Center for Cerebral Palsy. She is the Director of the Kameron Gait & Motion Analysis Laboratory, Director of Research & Education for the Center for Cerebral Palsy and faculty in the Tarjan Center. Dr. Fowler was the 2016 President for the American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine and currently the Chair of the Scientific Advisory Council for the Cerebral Palsy Foundation.

Dr. Fowler has over 40 years of experience in the evaluation and treatment of patients with neuromuscular disorders, focusing on cerebral palsy (CP). Her research program focuses on neural and biomechanical factors associated with movement ability. The influence of reduced selective motor control and plasticity in children with spastic CP using clinical, biomechanical, and neural imaging approaches has been a primary interest. She and her team developed Selective Control of the Lower Extremity (SCALE), a valid and reliable clinical assessment for individuals with spastic CP and are currently working on “mini-SCALE” for the assessment of infants and toddlers with or at risk for CP. Implementation science, which facilitates translation of research into clinical practice, is a current focus of her work. Through a collaboration with community partners and the Cerebral Palsy Foundation, she is working to optimize physical and occupational service delivery for infants and toddlers with cerebral palsy.
