Renewing the Renaissance

In today's society the word "patron" has lost some of its original connotation. The term "patron of the arts" is often used today to describe anyone who appreciates art in some form, as a private collector or as a museumgoer. The patron-artist relationship has become one that usually starts after the work of art has been created. Similarly, the pathway of an aspiring artist is no longer one that allows an artist to work as an apprentice and ultimately open a workshop to make a living by taking in commissions. Until they become established, most aspiring artists' incomes will come from a day job. Also, if self-employed, those artists work without most of the benefits received by the few salaried artists. Today, when there is more capital available than ever before, it is time to rethink how those with the means might function as patrons of aspiring artists. The closeness of the Renaissance relationship between the patron and exceptional artists could be re-established wherever the artist and patron reside, through the extensive use of social media and computer tools. Those exceptional artists who struggle in adulthood due to autism or executive functioning challenges could live successful fulfilling lives. A unique 21st century Renaissance --that is Renewing the Renaissance’s goal.
