About

The UCLA Family Development Program (FDP) provides evaluation, consultation, prevention and treatment services for parents and families who are facing early life medical challenges with their infant, including high risk pregnancies and NICU stays. The mission of FDP is to enhance the ability of family members to care for themselves, each other and to cope with stressors while bonding with their infant.

Services

The Family Development Program offers tiered support services to parents and families who are facing early life medical challenges with their infant and want to provide the best possible future for their family. The team also supports trauma- and resilience-informed practices within NICU units by offering training for NICU providers, nurses, and staff.

Medical challenges may include but are not limited to:

  • NICU stays
  • Surgeries
  • High-risk antepartum hospitalizations
  • Other medical complications

Service Tiers:

Individual, Couple and Group Therapy

Therapy services are available to families during their hospital stay. Telehealth visits are available through a HIPAA-compliant web interface using video and audio format, as well as consultations via telephone.

Family and Staff Consultation

Bedside consultations focus on strategies for coping with the many difficulties that parents experience when their infants are facing medical challenges. Staff consultations are delivered during weekly NICU rounds to support a trauma-informed approach for supporting infants and families. To supplement this consultation, the UCLA Prevention Center of Excellence has worked with the Family Development Program to launch handouts and videos for parents and staff. These materials are available for free on the DMH + UCLA Wellbeing for LA Learning Center and UCLA Prevention Center of Excellence Website.

Staff and Leadership Education

Trainings for implementing trauma-informed, resilience-promoting, and family-centered approaches to infant care are provided by the Family Development Program team. Curricula are available on a variety of topics, including the effects of trauma exposure on parenting, intergenerational transmission of trauma and strategies to support family-centered medical care. Trainings offer a welcoming environment to explore the skills to promote future resilience in the youngest and most vulnerable patients, and ultimately help patients and their families not only heal, but thrive.
