Are you interested in supporting our research? Below, you can learn about how to participate in our research through clinical trials or other studies here at the UCLA Jane & Terry Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior!

Research at the Semel Institute is wide-ranging from genetic studies, to monitoring & surveillance studies, to implementation, to clinical trials.

Basic Research

Basic medical research, or experimental research, includes studies of the cell, investigations on biochemical, genetic, and physiological factors, experiments with animals and animal models, and studies drugs and other materials. Generally, in these basic research studies, we affect or change one (or more) independent variable to investigate and/or determine the impact on a dependent.

Epidemiological Research

Epidemiological research studies define factors that lead to public health issues as well as appropriate responses, interventions, and solutions to those public health issues. We use research from both the field and the lab along with statistical analysis to track disease and predict its future outcomes.

Implementation and Prevention Studies

Implementation and Prevention studies bridge the gap between research and practice. These types of studies look at methods to promote the use of research findings and evidence-based approaches in practice – at the local, regional, and global level. This field of study intends to improve practices and treatments through consideration of factors that influence an organization’s ability to deliver them.

Clinical Research/Clinical Trials

Clinical research studies both health and illness. Through these studies, we learn how to prevent, diagnose, and treat a myriad of illness. In clinical research, we apply what we’ve learned through basic science research to human participants in the form of new treatments and care.
