Forensic Psychiatry

Overview

This elective provides comprehensive experience in the laws that apply to the practice of psychiatry both criminal and civil. Students will learn how to prepare for court testimony and will observe cases in court. They will observe cases in dispute both in child custody and child neglect provided at the Family and Dependency Courts. They will have the opportunity to meet with lawyers and private sector practitioners for criminal and civil cases. Didactics are included. A three-week rotation. Students will travel to Olive View Medical Center,V.A. Greater Los Angeles Health Care System, West Los Angeles Health Care Center., Sepulveda V.A. Medical Center, Family Court, Dependency Court Cedars- Sinai Medical Center, Metropolitan State Hospital and Department 95 Superior Court. Prerequisite: clerkship in psychiatry.
