Assessment and Managaement of Psychiatrically Ill Children and Adolescents in the Emergency Room Setting

Overview

Psychiatric interns observe faculty interview a patient in the ER leading to a case discussion on salient points of the interview; prompting participants to determine the best formulation, diagnoses and treatment plan.  

Objectives: 
collect a full psychiatric history from a minor in the ER dept.
perform a psychiatric mental status examination on a minor
formulate a psychiatric case
accurately diagnose psychiatric conditions in the ER
perform a thorough and comprehensive risk assessment
manage psychiatric emergencies with de escalation procedures & emergency medication as needed
using these tools determine disposition for minors in the ER setting
