CAPPS Clinical Services

Thanks to our research grants and generous gifts, all assessments and treatment services are free of charge. Youth are reimbursed for their participation in assessments.

Once CAPPS is contacted, a free initial evaluation is scheduled within a few weeks. The Structured Interview for Prodromal Syndromes is conducted during the initial evaluation and lasts approximately 3 hours. Through this evaluation (often combined with information from outside providers), we determine if the youth is at risk for psychosis.

If the youth is considered at high risk for psychosis, they are invited to be part of our two year early intervention program. All services are provided free of charge. Services include comprehensive diagnostic, psychosocial, and neuropsychological assessments conducted every six months to start to closely monitor symptoms and functioning. CAPPS early intervention program participants are also offered family or individual therapy sessions that provide further information about the high risk state and best practice intervention options and assistance in creating a plan for reducing stress and risk for escalating illness. Additionally, families are provided caregiver support, referrals, and case management services. We offer parent and teen skills groups to help reduce stress and enhance coping abilities. We welcome the opportunity to work closely with your outside providers if relevant; with your permission, we will regularly share our findings and recommendations with your other providers to help them optimize treatment, school advocacy, and crisis intervention.

Mental health problems are often like physical problems; the sooner they receive treatment, the better. The longer illness is left untreated, the greater the disruption to the person’s ability to study, work, make friends and interact comfortably with others.
