Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP)

Brandon C. Yarns, MD, MS; Hannah Roggenkamp, MD; Giovanna Sobrinho, MD

Tuesday and Wednesday AM

The ISTDP clinic allows residents to practice a psychoanalytically-oriented treatment that aims to access the patient’s unconscious efficiently and directly using innovative techniques such as pressure, challenge, and head-on collision.  Prior to seeing patients, residents receive a course of didactics introducing the technique and theory of ISTPD, with accompanied readings and video review.  In a weekly supervision session, attending psychiatrists review recorded therapy sessions with residents and provide real-time feedback.  Residents are also asked to write up a psychodynamic formulation for their patients to help think more systematically about the each patient and understand which interventions to use and why.
