Prizes

1. The International Society for the History of the Neurosciences (ISHN) has four awards:
   
   
   • Outstanding Book in the History of the Neurosciences
     
   • Outstanding Article in the History of the Neurosciences
     
   • Outstanding Student Essay in the History of the Neurosciences
     
   • Lifetime Contribution to the History of the Neurosciences
     
   
   
2. At meetings held in odd-numbered years, beginning with the 2017 meeting, the ISHN will award prizes for OUTSTANDING ARTICLE IN THE HISTORY OF THE NEUROSCIENCES and OUTSTANDING STUDENT ESSAY IN THE HISTORY OF THE NEUROSCIENCES.

   At meetings held in even-numbered years, beginning with the 2016 meeting, the ISHN will award prizes for OUTSTANDING BOOK IN THE HISTORY OF THE NEUROSCIENCES.

The rules formulated below will be applicable to the book, article and essay prizes unless otherwise indicated. For the Lifetime Contribution Award, special regulations have been formulated and are announced through the ISHN website.

3. Type of Publication
   
   
   • With respect to the book prize, monographs as well as multi-authored books may be nominated. Edited books will be excluded from the competition.
     
     
   • Articles should be published in the Journal for the History of the Neurosciences.
     
     
   • An essay should have been written by a single student. It may be a thesis or dissertation.

4. Language of the publication

   There is no restriction on the language of the publication

5. Date of publication

   The publication should have appeared in a time period, no longer than 3 years before the year of the award.

6. Field and qualifications of candidate
   • There are no restrictions on the academic discipline of a candidate.
     
     
   • The essay prize can be won only by a person who was a student at the time of the writing of the thesis.
     
     
   • A candidate does not necessarily have to be a member of the ISHN.

7. Nominations
   • Nominations may come from anyone; self-nominations are allowed. However, nominations from the Chair or committee members are not permitted. The Chair maintains the list of nominations.
     
     
   • Works published by a member or members of the committee are not eligible for consideration in the competition.

8. Committee members
   • The committee consists of a Chair and at least 3 members.
     
     
   • The Chair is appointed by the ISHN Board of Directors and serves for a period of 4 years with a potential extension of one period (maximum) of 2 years.
     
     
   • Members are appointed by the Chair. Members should represent different areas within the field of neuroscience history, should come from different countries, and must be full or student members of the ISHN. If the Chair considers it useful to extend the committee with additional members, he or she may do so.
     
     
   • The Committee's term of service commences at the close of the annual meeting of the ISHN.

Selection of Prize Winner

9. Selection procedure
   • On the basis of the nominations submitted to the Chair, a short list of candidates is produced by the Chair, in consultation with the members of the committee.
     
     
   • All members of the committee should evaluate the items mentioned on the short list and rank them.
     
     
   • Based on these judgements, the Chair will determine a final rank. In case of equal or near equal finishing, the Chair should consult the committee again.
     
     
   • The Chair will write a report on the election process, with a short rationale for the selected candidates, to the ISHN Board.
