The Semel Institute has a goal to reach out to the wider community, and there are many educational programs delivered through its research centers and programs, such as the Parenting and Friendship programs for families, and the Brain Boot Camps organised by the Memory and Aging Research Center. The Friends of Semel is a volunteer organization dedicated to supporting and enhancing state of the art research and treatment for illnesses of the mind and brain. They have a wide and varied program of Open Mind events, with a mission to present education programs on topics of mental illness, and lessen the stigma attached to these illnesses.
