Schizophrenia

People with schizophrenia have terrifying symptoms such as hearing voices, or believing that other people are reading their minds, controlling their thoughts, or plotting to harm them. They typically have enduring problems with memory, attention, and problem solving. Other less obvious symptoms are social isolation, problems understanding social interactions and knowing how to behave in social situations, and unusual speech and behavior.

Large study finds genetic 'overlap' between schizophrenia, bipolar disorder

Knowledge about the biological origin of diseases like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and other psychiatric conditions is critical to improving diagnosis and treatment.   In an effort to push the field forward, three UCLA researchers, along with scientists from more than 20 countries, have been taking part in one of the largest collaborative efforts in psychiatry — a genome-wide study involving more than 50,000 study participants aimed at identifying which genetic variants make people susceptible to psychiatric disease.

Neural Phenotypes for Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder

Project summary

This project investigates the inheritance of neural dysfunctions in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in population-based samples of monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twins.
