Abstract

Optogenetic stimulation can be used to selectively activate or inhibit locus coeruleus noradrenergic neurons. Tonic activation increases wakefulness and motor activity, and depletion of noradrenalin by high frequency stimulation is associated with a loss of muscle tone similar to that seen in cataplexy.
