SEMEL INSTITUTE

Residents often begin moonlighting in their PGY3 and PGY4 years. Using graduating residents as a referral source, residents often work in county clinics and other private or public settings. There is no in-house moonlighting at UCLA, and moonlighting hours are counted towards the resident’s 80-hour work week limit, per ACGME regulations. Residents enjoy moonlighting because it is their first chance to work as an independent psychiatrist without supervision. They also enjoy the extra income it provides, with residents earning $100 to $150 per hour. Residents typically moonlight between 4 to 8 hours per week.
