PGY1’s:

• The year is split into 13 rotation “blocks”: Neurobehavior, Neurology, Internal Medicine, Medicine ER, Harbor Psychiatry ER, VA Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), VA Dual Diagnosis, and two blocks each of Ambulatory Medicine and Geriatric Psychiatry. The other two blocks are split into Night Float and Vacation, each approximately two weeks.
• Medicine ER: there is no call; just shift work.
• Internal Medicine and Harbor Psychiatry ER: you take call with your teams. The frequency varies according to the number of members of the team at that time.
• You will have two blocks of UCLA Night Float / Vacation. During these blocks, you will have two weeks of night float and two weeks of vacation. When on float, you are at UCLA Medical Center from 6PM-8AM, five days a week, with Friday and Saturday free. You will see psychiatric consultations from the UCLA ER, with occasional consultations from the inpatient units of non-psychiatric services.
• You will never be alone in house while on call either at the VA or UCLA. You will always have an R2 or R3 available if you have questions or need assistance and the attending is always available by phone.
• Interns take psychiatry call at UCLA and at the West LA VA. The following rotations are those on which interns take call: Neurobehavior, Neurology, Ambulatory Medicine, Geriatric Psychiatry, VA Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), and VA Dual Diagnosis. Call frequency varies, but is approximately q5 during these months.
• UCLA Call:If you are on UCLA call on a weekday, you are on “UCLA short call.” Short call lasts from 5PM to approximately 10PM. You are on call with a team that includes the night float R1, the night float R2, and an R3. Like night float, you are performing psychiatric consultations for the UCLA ER. If you are on UCLA call on a weekend (Friday or Saturday), you are on call from 5PM-8AM the next morning. An R2 is always in-house, and the R3 will be present until 10PM to triage consults, handle floor calls, and for back up.
• VA Call:If you are on VA call on a weekday, you are on “VA short call.” Similar to UCLA short call, a short call shift is from 5PM to approximately 10PM. You alternate seeing consultations from the VA ER with an R2. If you are on VA call on a weekend (Saturday or Sunday) you are on call from 5PM-8AM the following morning. You alternate seeing consults with the R2 up until 11PM, after which you see the consultations the rest of the shift, with the R2 present in house as back-up.

PGY2’s:

VA call is from 5PM-8AM on weekdays and from 8AM-8AM the following morning on weekends. You will be excused from clinical duties on your post call day. UCLA coverage consists of one UCLA night float block that lasts approximately 3 weeks, with hours from 10PM-8AM. In addition, you have occasional UCLA Friday night calls from 5PM-8AM and weekend calls from 8AM-8AM the following morning. Call in PGY2 year is variable but averages approximately q7-8.

PGY3’s:

Call is only at UCLA and only until 10PM. You handle floor calls, triage ER consults, and assist the other residents as needed. Frequency is approximately q14.

PGY4’s:

NO CALL!!!
