Program Description: This program is an innovative partnership of The Help Group, a nonprofit organization that serves children with special needs, and UCLA. It is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art neuropsychological services for children, adolescents, and young adults. It offers a yearlong practicum. Trainees typically begin their training in July or August. Practicum trainees are expected to participate in all aspects of neuropsychological assessment under the supervision of postdoctoral fellows and the program director, Dr. Levin, including the initial intake interview, neuropsychological testing, scoring, interpretation, and feedback with parents. Trainees will also assist in writing sections of comprehensive reports (e.g., presenting problems, history, behavioral observations, recommendations). Depending on their performance, some trainees can be given the chance to produce a whole neuropsychological report. Occasionally, practicum trainees can also participate in school observations and attend school consultation meetings. Opportunities for doing research are also available through the specialized educational programs of The Help Group. However, first priority is given to the practicum trainees’ assessment duties. In addition, the practicum trainees are provided free admission to the Annual Help Group Summit that highlights advances and best practices in assessing and treating various neurodevelopmental disorders.
Trainees are expected to commit to at least 16 hours per week Monday through Wednesday (we typically do not schedule clients on Thursdays and Fridays). Ideally, one trainee would commit to Mondays & Tuesdays, and the other would commit to Mondays and Wednesdays. Part of the 16-hour commitment includes group didactics/supervision every other Monday morning.
Current Position Openings: Two positions are available each year
Resource/Space Allocation: The practicum trainees will report at the Help Group campus in Sherman Oaks where they will share office space with two postdoctoral fellows. Supervision: The practicum trainees will receive at least 2 hours of weekly individual supervision from the postdoctoral fellows and Dr. Levin, who is a licensed clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist. In addition, the practicum trainees will participate in weekly group didactics and supervision (1.5 hours) every other Monday with the postdoctoral fellows. Trainees also have the option of attending neuropsychology didactics on the UCLA campus on Thursdays.
