Trainees at the Tarjan Center
One of the Tarjan Center's chief activities is the preparation of personnel for careers in fields relating to developmental disabilities. Because the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities are complex, service providers and professionals require expertise in many different disciplines. Our faculty and trainees follow an interdisciplinary approach and provide state of the art diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment services through UCLA-based Tarjan Center Clinical Training & Services. We welcome our new trainees for 2014-2015.
Jena Bailey graduated from UCLA in 2013 with a B.A. in Spanish. She is currently a volunteer research assistant for Dr. Eileen Fowler. She is currently working on a project to make video gaming more accessible for adults and children with cerebral palsy. In addition, she assists with gait and functional evaluations for patients in the Kameron Gait and Motion Analysis Laboratory and assists with literature reviews, data collection and data analysis for research projects. She will begin a Doctor of Physical Therapy program in the fall of 2014. She is looking forward to pursuing a career in physical therapy.
Kent Heberer is a Ph.D. student in Bioengineering working in the Kameron Gait and Motion Analysis Laboratory in the UCLA Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. His advisor is Eileen Fowler, PhD, PT. His dissertation is focused on the applications of quantitative gait analysis in the assessment of disease progression in Duchenne muscular dystrophy. He provides technical expertise in the collection and analysis of motion and electromyographical data during gait assessments for patients with walking disabilities with a focus on Duchenne muscular dystrophy and cerebral palsy. His current research interests are in dynamic systems and musculoskeletal modeling of gait pathologies.
Samantha Fong is a UCLA student earning a B.S. in Physiological Sciences. After aiding as a volunteer in a research opportunity for children with cerebral palsy, she became a volunteer research assistant for Dr. Eileen Fowler. She assists with data collection and data analysis for research in cerebral palsy, as well as with gait and functional evaluations for patients in the Kameron Gait and Motion Analysis Laboratory.
