Childhood depression hurts! Depression can make it difficult for children to achieve their personal and academic potential, and can make it challenging to have fulfilling relationships with others. Once children become depressed, they often continue to struggle with depression throughout childhood, and later on into adulthood. The good news is, childhood depression is treatable!
S.O.S. (Systems of Support) is a research study testing two therapeutic approaches based on other treatments that have shown some success in prior studies for children with depression. With your help, we hope to learn more about the best treatments for children suffering with depression. Eligible children will participate in one of two therapeutic programs designed to treat childhood depression. One program focuses on individual treatment in which the child will work one-on-one with a therapist. The goal is to provide emotional support and to encourage healthy behavior and coping. The other treatment program focuses on working with the family to help the child and parents work together to solve problems. The goal is to strengthen the child’s coping and teach the family how best to encourage their child’s healthy behavior.
