Our newest area of research involves a novel non-medication approach to the treatment of ADHD symptoms called trigeminal nerve stimulation. TNS is a new form of treatment that provides a very low amount of stimulation to nerves in the forehead during sleep. Participants place a strip that looks like a band aid across their forehead each night before they go to sleep.
In our first study of TNS and ADHD, we found that ADHD symptoms significantly improved during TNS treatment. Most families liked the treatment and there have been no significant side effects or other problems tolerating TNS. If this new study is successful, it might provide a basis for larger studies that could lead to an approved non-medication treatment for ADHD.
