Guide to Including Volunteers with Disabilities
"LINCS: Creating Communities That Include Volunteers with Disabilities" is based on a demonstration project led by the Tarjan Center and the Hands on Network/Points of Light Foundation, the nations largest network of volunteer centers. Together, we established coalitions in 10 cities across California, Florida, and Hawaii that included over 1000 local organizations-- nonprofits looking for volunteers and disability-related organizations looking for meaningful community engagement opportunities for clients with disabilities.
These coalitions, called Local Inclusion Network Collaboratives (LINCS), helped their communities include more individuals with disabilities as givers of community service (not just receivers). After three years, they had opened doors to 5000 people with disabilities who gave over 65,000 hours of community service.
This guidebook shares recommended best practices for working with local organizations to better include people with disabilities in community volunteerism.
