CALIFORNIA CONSORTIUM ON HIGHER EDUCATION FOR PEOPLE WITH INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES WORKING CONFERENCE
March 10, 2014
"Excellent Gathering of Movers & Shakers"
The Working Conference of the California Consortium on Higher Education for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) is a bi-annual event that brings together educators, professionals working in disability services, families and self advocates to discuss best and promising practices, emerging issues and to share resources related to transition and higher education for young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Typically, a conference meeting takes place in both southern and northern California.
On March 10, 2014, the consortium returned to The California Endowment’s excellent Center for Healthy Communities in Los Angeles for the southern California event. Over 104 parents, students, and administrators from higher education, regional centers and vocational rehabilitation joined representatives from college disability services, vocational counseling, adult service agencies, K-12 school districts, Disability Rights of California and the State Council on Developmental Disabilities in day packed with information, discussion, and engaged participants, who left the meeting pleased with the level of engagement and the potential for increasing higher education options for young people with IDD. The vast majority of participants agreed that their knowledge of higher education and employment increased as a result of the event. As one participant stated, “every speaker and participant gave very informative information and perspectives.”
The northern California conference is scheduled for fall of 2014. Please contact Wilbert Francis at Wfrancis@mednet.ucla.edu to be included on the postsecondary education listserv to receive California Consortium on Higher Education announcements.
