Bipolar II Depression – Clinical Trial

Under the direction of Lori Altshuler, M.D., the Mood Disorders Research Program is conducting a treatment study on Bipolar II Depression.  The research compares two drugs, lithium and sertraline taken alone or in combination.   Participation in the study is voluntary, confidential, and will not affect your present or future care at UCLA.

Target audience: 

Have you been struggling with DEPRESSION, including:

  • Loss of interest or low energy
  • Sleeping problems or change in appetite
  • Feelings of worthlessness

 

IN THE PAST, have you ever had at least 3 of the following symptoms for 4 days in a row?

  • Inflated sense of self importance
  • Decreased need for sleep
  • Increased talkativeness
  • Flight of ideas or racing thoughts
  • Easily distracted
  • Increased goal-directed activity
  • Excessive involvement in activities that can bring pleasure, but may have disastrous consequences (e.g. sexual affairs and spending excessively.)
Involvement: 

If you are eligible, your participation in the research will last 17 weeks (~ 4 months) and include laboratory tests and weekly or biweekly psychiatric evaluations and monthly social and occupational evaluations. You would not know which treatment you were receiving during the course of this study; however, upon completion or exit from the study, you will be notified so that your treating physician could be informed.

Benefits: 

Qualified participants will receive free investigational medication, doctor visits, and financial compensation up to $375.
