Memory Program Licenses
- In an effort to increase community access to our memory programs, the UCLA Longevity Center offers the opportunity to license its memory education programs. Licensees receive full training in the program they choose to license, as well as on-going support via a monthly conference call. The monthly conference calls provide licensees access to our on-site program representatives, neuropsychologists, and administrative personnel.
- Organizations or individuals interested in bringing one of these innovative programs to their own site or community will need to submit an application and receive approval from the Center's licensing committee.

Brain Boot Camp* is designed for people with age-related memory concerns who wish to improve or maintain their memory ability. The group course is not intended for people with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. However, individual courses can be tailored for persons with cognitive impairment. This three-hour intensive course teaches brain healthy lifestyles and enhances memory ability rapidly.
- Brain Boot Camp participants will . . .
- Learn basic techniques to respond to everyday memory challenges.
- Master advanced memory techniques for names and faces.
- Get tips for a healthy heart and brain diet.
- Gauge progress and notice results in just three hours.
- Take home strategies, exercises, and assignments to continue improving memory on a daily basis.
- Typically ten participants are accepted for each class.
- Trainers use a curriculum manual. A master copy is given to the Trainer, who is then responsible for making copies for the participants.
*Brain Boot Camp program is available for Individual License only.
Many research studies, including those conducted by Gary Small, M.D. and his colleagues at UCLA, have shown that the Memory Training strategies taught to participants are effective in improving memory in older adults with normal, age-related memory challenges. The group course is not intended for people with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. Also, the benefits of memory training can last well beyond the actual course—studies show that the benefits can last from six months to five years.
- Four week program with classes typically offered once a week for 2 hours each
- The course helps participants develop good memory habits and teaches techniques to improve memory. The course targets the four most common memory complaints that people experience in daily life:
- Forgetting names and faces
- Forgetting to do things in the future (like keeping an appointment, passing on a phone message, or forgetting why you walked into a room)
- Forgetting where you put things (like your keys, glasses, or wallet)
- Inability to immediately recall something you know or “tip of the tongue” memory challenges

The Memory Fitness Program teaches methods that enhance memory abilities and brain healthy lifestyles. It is based on the clinical research of Gary Small, M.D., director of the UCLA Longevity Center and Karen Miller, Ph.D. of the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA. The program is for people with mild memory concerns and not for anyone with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia.
- Typically offered as two classes per week for one hour each for a total of 12 instructional hours over a six-week period.
- Recommended maximum of 20 participants are accepted for each class. Smaller groups are encouraged.
- Trainers from the community site are selected to attend a two-day training provided by a psychologist from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
- Trainers receive a curriculum manual that guides the trainer, as well as a work-book for participants. A master copy is given to the Lead Trainer, who is then responsible for making copies for the other trainers and participants.
- Focuses on four general areas that are associated with maintaining memory fitness - healthy diet, physical activity, stress reduction, and memory training.
