The Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior is an internationally-reknowned teaching and research facility dedicated to the study of human neuroscience and related fields. As an integral part of the UCLA Health System, the Institute offers education and training at both undergraduate and graduate levels and supports an active and varied program of basic and clinical research.

The building at 760 Westwood Plaza is located at the western end of the Center for Health Sciences and opposite the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center; the medical enterprise dominates the southern half of the UCLA campus and is adjacent to Westwood Village in Los Angeles. The building is home to many of the teaching and research programs within the Semel Institute, and some partial/day clinical services are also located within this building. It is also the administrative center of the Institute.

Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital

The Semel Institute is closely integrated to the 75 bed Resnick Neurospychiatric Hospital, housed within the recently-opened [2008] Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, which features the most advanced medical technology in the world. The Resnick Hospital includes adult and geriatric beds, and separate areas for adolescents and younger children - all in reconfigurable spaces. In addition, there are multiple specialized Outpatient Clinics in various areas of psychiatry, as well as facilities for neuropathology, electroencephalography, rehabilitation therapy, etc.

Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center

The Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, which features the most advanced medical technology in the world and 520 large, private rooms for patients, was officially dedicated at a ceremony attended by former first lady Nancy Reagan, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, former Gov. Gray Davis, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, UCLA Acting Chancellor Norman Abrams, architect and UCLA Medal recipient C.C. Pei, and other dignitaries. The center is the biggest construction project in the history of the University of California and opened in June 2008.

The new center, which houses the UCLA Medical Center, Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA, and the Stewart and Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA, is a technological and architectural masterpiece designed to meet the evolving needs of a 21st-century patient care and research center. It was built with more than 3 million pounds of travertine marble imported from Tivoli, Italy, and features the latest technology, including wireless access to reports, lab results, clinical imaging and patient vital signs; audiovisual communications; diagnostics; robotics; imaging systems; and advanced audio and high-resolution video conferencing capabilities.

The new building also features 520 large, private patient rooms, sun-filled views, daybeds to accommodate family members, wireless internet access, room service with customized meals, outdoor play areas for pediatric patients, gardens and more. In addition, the entire facility is surrounded by green spaces, natural light, high-quality woods, carpeting, fountains and open terraces to inspire and welcome patients, guests and staff.

The Gonda (Goldschmied) Neuroscience and Genetics Research Center, is a state-of-the-art facility that helps researchers explore the depths of science. The research center is home to UCLA's new Department of Human Genetics and the Brain Research Insititute, incorporating an array of important research technology, innovative laboratory design, and an atmosphere that fosters collegial and professional interactions among scientists.

The Gonda center was made possible by a $45-million gift from Leslie and Susan Gonda, the largest donation from an individual benefactor in the history of UCLA and one of the largest ever received by the University of California.

300 Medical Plaza is an ambulatory care teaching/clinical facility located across the street from the Semel Institute, which is a major site for ambulatory care, education and research. The University Affiliated Mental Retardation Center is also a part of the Semel Institute. The aim of the Center is the acquisition of new knowledge, the training of personnel, and the provision of service to patients. The Center emphasizes basic as well as clinical, biomedical, and behavioral research. The Center includes an inpatient service for children, outpatient clinics, and an after-care program.

The West Los Angeles VA Medical Center is a 500-bed hospital complex (not including the nursing home and domiciliary) affiliated with the UCLA School of Medicine. Over 230 residents are currently completing training in 20 specialties. The Psychiatric Section is a 125-bed service, with emphasis on acute intensive care, which offers a wide range of treatment and investigative approaches for patients with acute and chronic illness. The diverse inpatient, partial hospital, and outpatient services include both general and specialized (for patients with schizophrenia, mood disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders, alcoholism and substance abuse, family problems, geriatric mental disorders, neurobehavioral disorders, and mixed medical-psychiatric disorders) treatment units.

Extensive rehabilitation services are available for patients with chronic illness. Community psychiatry outreach programs are also available. The resident has the opportunity to gain experience with all of the major psychiatric syndromes, to learn to work within a team structure, and to gain exposure to a full variety of clinical treatment modalities. We encourage residents to collaborate with faculty on research projects as time and other resources allow.

MIRECC Building 210

The Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Centers (MIRECC) were established by Congress with the goal of researching the causes and treatments of mental disorders and using education to put new knowledge into routine clinical practice in the VA.

The MIRECCs conduct research and produce clinical educational programs and products but generally provide direct clinical treatment to veterans only in the context of research protocols. Veterans should seek treatment at their local VA medical centers.

The Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center (SACC), located in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, is part of the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VAGLAHS). SACC is the major outpatient facility charged with caring for the 1.4 million veterans living in Northern Los Angeles and is a comprehensive ambulatory care, education and research facility. There is also a 120-bed academic nursing home care unit on the campus. The ACC offers a comprehensive array of services that supports the primary care program. These services include a wide spectrum of on-site ambulatory care activities for internal medicine, neurology, and specialty ambulatory surgery services, comprehensive psychiatry and psychology services, including alcohol and substance abuse treatment, dentistry, social services, rehabilitation medicine, audiology, speech pathology, prosthetics services, and an outpatient Spinal Cord Injury Program.

S-VAGLAHS also has a Substance Abuse Treatment and Detoxification Program, Day Treatment and Vocational Rehabilitation Programs, an outpatient Geropsychiatry service, and an inpatient ward at the West Los Angeles Campus of the VAGLAHS.

As a major training center in the San Fernando Valley, the Sepulveda Campus of the VAGLAHS receives trainees from throughout the Los Angeles County area. There are medical students from UCLA Medical School; psychology interns rotating from the University of Southern California, Fuller Graduate School of Psychology, and California State University, Northridge; occupational therapist trainees, nursing students, art therapy trainees, social work trainees, and mental health associate trainees from various educational institutions. The Psychiatry Service encourages an interdisciplinary approach among all mental health professionals.

Olive View - UCLA Medical Center

Olive View - UCLA Medical Center, our program "home," is a county hospital located in the north end of the San Fernando Valley, about 30 minutes away from UCLA. The facility is a 377-bed hospital built in May 1987, the newest acute care medical center operated by the County of Los Angeles. It serves the needs of low income and indigent patients as well as the surrounding middle class community. It is a beautiful campus that provides an enjoyable working environment. As is true with most county facilities, many patients present with acute, untreated illnesses. Housestaff are exposed to common medical illnesses as well as a wide variety of unusual and rare diseases.

Olive View has eight internal medicine ward services (100 beds), with two teams on call every fourth night. A maximum of five new patients may be admitted to an intern on call. Each ward service normally has one resident, two interns, and one medical student. Three teams staff the 18-bed ICU at Olive View; each team is comprised of one intern and one resident. In addition to the inpatient medical services, Olive View has a very busy outpatient department, including the emergency room, urgent care and a full complement of continuity and subspecialty clinics. Additionally, housestaff provide consultation for patients on the surgical, obstetric/gynecologic, and psychiatric services. Subspecialty fellows and a full-time clinically oriented faculty provide consultations, procedure services, and supervision. Olive View-UCLA Medical Center is one of the main training sites for other UCLA residency programs, including General Surgery, ENT, Plastics, Urology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Anesthesiology, Pediatrics, OB-Gyn, Neurology, Emergency Medicine, and Family Medicine.

Olive View has a unique patient population with wide-ranging pathology. This population is younger than most, with an average age between 40 and 50. Approximately 50% of patients are Hispanic; the other 50% are caucasions, Asians, African-Americans and many other diverse ethnicities. The dynamics of the training environment translate into a rich internal medicine experience in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Such favorable circumstances have made Olive View one of the most popular rotations not only for the residents of other training programs in Los Angeles, but also for students at UCLA and nationally.

Kern Medical Center is a 222 bed acute care teaching hospital. The Medical Center serves a community of approximately 650,000, and the hospital is owned and operated by the County of Kern.
