About this website

This website is part of a phased update to the Semel Institute and Department of Psychiatry websites, with the aim of eventually integrating the old NPI and NPIH sites. Inevitably some information will occasionally disappear, but there are many mechanisms to index and search the site content, enabling you to find the information you were after.  This site has been designed, tested and hosted by the Semel Institute at UCLA. Please read the copyright agreement and terms of use. The project manager is Robert Carr.

Logging In

In order to log in to this website, you currently need a UCLA online ID.  If you do not have such an ID, or  want to check your details, please visit https://logon.ucla.edu.  To obtain a UCLA online ID, you do not necessarily need to be a current student, faculty or staff member.  During busy periods, it can take up to a minute to complete log in.

Once logged in you should see a grey bar across the top of the page with your account name and a 'Logout' button.  If you do not, Refresh your browser.  Please note that when you are logged in, you are viewing live content, that can sometimes take a few seconds to generate; conversely when you are not logged in, you will be viewing cached content that is up to 24 hours out of date - but pages should load far more quickly.  It's your choice, but it is recommended that you only login to the system when you need to make content updates, or to view private content.

Current technical issue (Update 23 Nov 09)

Login is currently taking about 60 seconds to achieve.  Still working on a solution to this and it may take some time to speed this up.

Logout: After logout, your browser may 'remember' your UCLA ID for up to 1 hour.  If you are using a shared machine, it is recommended that you also close the browser after logging out of the website to ensure that any temporary information about yourself is cleared from your computer's memory.

Viewing This Website

The site is Section 508 compliant so that most pages are accessible and capable of being processed by a text reader. This site has been optimized to work with the Mozilla Firefox web browser, with a monitor having a screen resolution of at least 1024 pixels across and text size set to medium. It has also been tested with Internet Explorer (PC versions 6 onwards) and the latest versions of the Netscape (PC and Mac) and the Safari (PC and Mac) browsers. Please note that some a small number of pages within this site may not render correctly on Internet Explorer version 6; the site may also not render properly on older browsers, such as IE5 for the Mac (which is no longer distributed or supported). For an improved visual user experience, it is recommended that Javascript is enabled; it is also recommended (for your security) you have the most recent version of your web browser installed (links below to latest downloadable version).

  • Firefox: Tools>Options>Content>Enable Javascript *
  • IE 6/7/8: Tools>Internet Options>Security>Security Level in this zone>Custom Level>Scripting>Active Scripting - Enable
  • Safari: Edit>Preferences>Security>Enable Javascript *
  • Netscape: Tools>Options>Content>Enable Javascript *

(* Note on a Mac, the Javascript options are changed by Preferences > ...)

Some pages in this site may require plugins to view online content, or readers to view downloaded files; these can be downloaded for free using the following links:

Printing Pages

If you select the printer-friendly view of a page (small icon at the foot of each page), a plain text version of the content you are viewing is sent directly to your printer.  Any web links that are embedded in such pages are listed at the foot of the page.

Certain sections of the site are organized into 'books:' when printing such content through the printer friendly pages, you get all the child pages, ie, either subordinate chapters or sections within the chapter.

Bookmarking

Social bookmarking links can be found at the bottom of all pages in this site. These social sites allow you to store, tag and share links across the internet. You can share these links both with friends and people with similar interests. You can also access your links from any computer you happen to be using. So, if you come across a page that you find interesting and want to save for future reference or share it with other people, simply click on one of these links to add to your list. All of these sites are free to use but do require you to register. Once you have registered you can begin bookmarking. Each of the sites works slightly differently so use the links below to find out which service best suits your needs.

If you are logged into the system, you can bookmark pages into your account, using the star icon at the foot of most pages.  You can also email links of interest to friends and colleagues using the mail icon, also at the foot of most pages.

Searching for information

You can browse the site using the menus that appear on most pages, viewing the site map or by hunting through the various classification ('tagging') indexes.  You can also browse publications stored on this site, and search publications by keyword.

Sometimes the navigation system isn't enough! You may have noticed a small search box in the top right hand corner of each webpage. If you type a search term, a custom search engine scans this website, hopefully coming up with the results you need. If, for whatever reason, you end up with a 'Page not found' type of error, you will also have the option to search through Google for the content you were after.
