Dr. Takeuchi's program of research focuses on two areas:

  1. Understanding the social factors that contribute to the uneven distribution of health and illness in minority communities.
  2. The use of mental health services among ethnic minority groups.
In the first strand of research, he has conducted several major studies on Asian Americans in California and Hawaii that examine the rates and correlates of psychiatric disorders among Asian Americans. The second strand of research focuses on the entry and treatment of ethnic minorities who have a serious mental illness. Again, methodological problems have often forced policy makers to rely on anecdotal material to address some critical issues in the delivery of services to ethnic minority consumers. Research in this area has attempted to fill this gap by providing empirical data for major policy issues. In this strand, he has investigated how people come into mental health treatment and the relative importance of attempts to make the mental health system more responsive to ethnic and poor communities.

He is currently conducting the National Latino and Asian American Study (NLAAS) with Dr. Margarita Alegría. This project combines both his interest in psychiatric disorders as well as help-seeking behavior. Takeuchi has participated in a wide range of community activities with a number of organizations such as the National Pacific and Asian American Health Forum and the National Asian Women's Health Organization.
