Psychotic Disorders-Adult: Long-Term Management, Schizophrenia

Overview

This is an overview course on understanding and managing psychotic illnesses, particularly schizophrenia. Dr. Marder, the Course Director will discuss psychosis as a process related to the misinterpretation of internal and external information. He will focus on psychosis as a symptom with multiple causes and the processes for evaluating patients who present with psychotic symptoms. He will also discuss the biological underpinnings of psychosis as well as the epidemiology, genetics, and course of schizophrenia. Two sessions will focus on the acute and long-term management of schizophrenia with pharmacological and psychosocial treatments. Objectives: 
Residents will improve their understanding of the neurobiology of psychosis
Residents will understand the evidence-base that support pharmacological and psychosocial treatments for psychosis.
Residents will understand the process for evaluating psychotic patients.
