Attachment: Types and Implications

Overview

A review over three meetings of 1) Attachment Theory, including John Bowlby’s contributions, the experimental paradigm of the Infant Strange Situation and resulting Attachment Categories (Ainsworth)

2) Longitudinal outcome research (Sroufe), the Adult Attachment Interview (Main), intergenerational attachment patterns

3) Theory of Mentalization (Fonagy) and intertwining of attachment theory into treatment (early childhood interventions, couples’ therapy, work with adult and, particularly, primitive patients) 

Objectives: 
Overview of the Infant Strange Situation and the resulting Attachment Categories
Overview of the Adult Attachment Interview, its strengths and limitations
Clinical understanding about the verbal and nonverbal transmission of intergenerational attachment patterns
Ability to define mentalization and its use in treatment
