Addiction Psychiatry

Overview

This elective provides an overview of how to identify and manage patients with substance use disorders. Students will function as a sub-intern on the inpatient substance abuse service. Duties will include care of patients admitted for detoxification, management of co-occurring psychiatric disorders and assisting in developing an aftercare program. Students will also participate in the outpatients Addiction Medicine Clinic to learn techniques of psychopharmacological management of addictive disorders. Finally students will visit residential treatment facilities, sober living homes and drug courts to gain a full appreciation of the clinical management of patients with substance use disorders. A three-week elective. Prerequisite: clerkship in psychiatry.
