Training Grant in Translational Neuroscience of Drug Abuse - Postdoctoral Fellowships Now Accepting Applications<br /> (Due Friday, May 10, 2013, by 12PM PST)

Overview

INFORMATION for POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW APPLICANTS:

Successful Trainees of this Program Will:

  • Conduct an experiment under the mentorship of a TNDA Faculty Member                       
  • Receive the integrative knowledge base needed to plan, conduct and obtain independent funding (R-Series Grants, K-Awards) for bidirectional translational studies of drug abuse.         
  • Be awarded a monthly stipend, basic health insurance (as set by NIH: NOT-OD-12-033) & $1000 travel award.

TNDA Postdoctoral Fellows will select a primary research concentration in 1) Animal Models and Molecular & Cellular Neurobiology, 2) Brain Imaging and Cognitive Neuroscience, or 3) Preclinical Pharmacology and Neuroscience.  Fellows will carry out their research project in a TNDA mentor’s laboratory (below), but will gain exposure to other areas of drug abuse research through laboratory rotations, common core training elements as well as by formal and informal interaction among TNDA faculty.

Below are the names of the TNDA Program Faculty.  Semel Institute/Department of Psychiatry Instructors are affiliated with the UCLA Semel Institute/Department of Psychiatry.  The External Instructors are UCLA professors that are not affiliated with the Semel Institute/Department of Psychiatry, but have academic appointments in other relevant areas of study (i.e., Neurology, Psychology, Pharmacology, etc.) but are still members of the TNDA Program Faculty.

Application
Pre-requisites: 

POSTDOCTORAL APPLICANTS MUST HAVE: 

a) A doctoral degree, such as an M.D. or Ph.D. in neuroscience, biological science, psychology, pharmacology or other related field of study AT TIME OF SLOT APPOINTMENT (can apply if you do not have your Ph.D. but it is anticipated prior to formal appointment);

b) A commitment to the study of drug addiction;

c) US citizenship, non‐citizen nationality* or permanent residency;

d) Contacted a member of the TNDA Program Faculty who will serve as their mentor and supervise their training and research experience prior to submitting an application;

e)  Not received more than 3 years of aggregate NRSA support at the postdoctoral level (any combination of individual & institutional awards).

* Non‐citizen nationals are persons born in outlying possessions of the United States (i.e., American Samoa and Swains Island).

ALL INTERESTED TRAINEES MUST RESEARCH THE TNDA FACULTY (above) and CONTACT A POSSIBLE MENTOR PRIOR TO SUBMITTING THE APPLICATION PACKAGE MATERIALS (below).  YOUR POTENTIAL FACULTY MENTOR MUST BE IN YOUR AREA OF EXPERTISE and BE WILLING TO SERVE AS YOUR MENTOR.  IT IS YOUR (the applicant's) RESPONSIBILITY TO INITIATE CONTACT, DISCUSS YOUR RESEARCH PROJECT and OBTAIN APPROVAL TO CONDUCT YOUR EXPERIMENT IN A MENTOR'S LABORATORY.

 THE APPLICATION PACKAGE MUST CONTAIN:

1. Self-statement (maximum of 3 pages, single spaced, 11-point arial font) detailing accomplishments to date, background information relevant to the applicant's interest in drug abuse research and a formal description of the applicant's proposed research project.  Postdoctoral trainees must name the UCLA TNDA Program Faculty that has agreed to serve as their mentor for the duration of the fellowship in their self-statement.

*Current fellows applying for re-newal should submit a progress statement on their research project and achievements throughout the past year.  

2. Current curriculum vitae including list of publications.

3. Nomination letter written by a faculty member or mentor who knows the applicant best

This training grant funds 4 postdoctoral slots for 12-month appointments. In the event a trainee terminates an appointment early, calls for abbreviated appointment slots will be advertised.
